Fernando Baquero directed the Department of Microbiology at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital (1977-2008); from 2008 to date, he has been Scientific Director of the Ramón y Cajal Health Research Institute (IRYCIS), and currently Research Professor in Microbial Evolution in the IRYCIS. He was Senior Scientist in Evolutionary Biology at the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, INTA-NASA associated). He received the Excellence Awards of the American ASMICAAC, the European and Spanish Societies for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases; the Descartes Award for International Cooperative Research of the EU Commission, the Garrod Medal of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, and the André Lwoff Award of the European Federation of Microbiological Societies (2015). He is member of the American Academy of Microbiology, the European Academy for Microbiology, the European Academy for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and the Iberoamerican Academy for Evolutionary Biology. His research interests focus on the biochemistry, genetics, population biology, epidemiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology of antibiotic resistance and virulence, and particularly on the multi-level processes influencing selection of resistant microbes. On these and related topics, he published (PubMed) 465 full papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and has an H-index of 72 (Web of Science) or 87 (Google Scholar, 50 from 2011). As side-interests, he has also published in the fields of philosophy of science, particularly in epistemology of complex biological systems.
