María J. Ledesma Carbayo is Associate Professor in the Electronic Engineering Dept at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and scientist in the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine. She graduated in telecommunication engineering in 1998, with a Master Thesis on medical image analysis. She additionally completed two different Master programs, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics from Patras University and (Greece) and Master degree in Bioengineering from the UNED (Spain). She obtained her First Class Honours PhD degree from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 2003 for her contributions to spatio-temporal non-rigid registration based methods for myocardial motion estimation. She got her permanent associate professorship at Unversidad Politécnica de Madrid in 2010 where she is a faculty member teaching in the Telecomunication Engineering School and where she leads several research lines in the Biomedical Imaging Technologies lab among them the cardiovascular research line. Her main research motivation relates to improving health care delivery through advances in biomedical imaging technologies, providing technological solutions to actual clinical or biological problems. Her main areas of expertise deal with biomedical image analysis and processing, especially those topics dealing with cardiac imaging, image guided therapy, microscopy image analysis for developmental biology, registration, and motion estimation and compensation. She has also an important international network of collaborators. Some of them began in her visiting experiences at Oxford Univ. (1999), École Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne (2000, 2001, 2012), National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MA, USA, 2006, 2007) and Johns Hopkins Univ. (2013, 2014). Her research in biomedical imaging processing has been published in journals and conferences (more than 100). She has a lot of experience participating and leading national and international research projects, from the Spanish Financial Offices, International Agencies as well as national and international Companies. She has been collaborating with the MVision Consortium between Comunidad de Madrid and Massachusetts Institute of Technology being a faculty member and participating in several projects. She is member of the Spanish Society of Biomedical Engineering and IEEE and she has been elected to be part of the IEEE Bio Imaging and Signal Processing Technical Committee. Additionally she is involved in different initiatives dealing with international cooperation for development promoting educational and research activities at the university and closely collaborating with NGOs and foundations.
