Carlos Gancedo is a disciple of Alberto Sols and currently works at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas “Alberto Sols” CSIC-UAM where he continues his studies on topics related to yeast biochemistry and molecular biology. He has worked with yeasts for more than fifty years. His work has been centered around the regulation of energy metabolism in yeasts. He has worked on catabolite inactivation of gluconeogenic enzymes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and together with Juana M. Gancedo discovered the regulation of hexokinase by trehalose-6-phosphate in S. cerevisiae. Together with Carmen-Lisset Flores he has worked in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis in the non-conventional yeast Yarrowia lipolytica and has unveiled important differences in the regulation of those pathways when compared with the model yeast S. cerevisiae. Currently, he is interested in the metabolism of amino sugars in yeasts and in the phenomenon of moonlighting proteins, a topic in which he has published four critical reviews in the last years. He has organized several international practical courses on Yeast Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and has collaborated with the Fundación Ramon Areces in the organization of several symposia, the last one together with Jack Pronk (Delft, The Netherlands) entitled “Yeasts as versatile testbeds for the life sciences” in October 2016. He has been active in the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) receiving de FEBS Diplôme d´honneur for his services and is also an Honorary Member of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
